Southern Sky of Atacama, Chile - 2018
Photo Gallery
Although the night sky visible from the Northern Hemisphere holds many wonderous sights, the Southern Hemisphere heavens contain astonishing objects and vistas that can only be seen from dark skies south of the Equator.
The high deserts of the Atacama in northern Chile are home to some of the greatest astronomical observatories on the planet. But this location also draws amateurs astronomers to its dark sky.
In April 2018, I traveled with a small group organized by Malcolm Park to the Atacama Lodge a few miles south of San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. The lodge is surrounded by incredible volcanic scenery by day and awesome views of the southern sky at night.
I brought an iOptron iEQ30 Pro equatorial mount, a bag full of camera lenses, and several DSLR bodies. The images below are the result of this trip.
