Fisheye: Milky Way - Early Evening
This full-sky (circular fisheye lens) image shows the southern Milky Way in the early evening just astronomical twilight ends (oriented with North up) from northern Chile in mid-April. The diagram to the right identifies key features in the photograph.
The Milky Way in the lower left is rising and encompasses Centaurus, Crux (Southern Cross), and Carina.To the bottom right are the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC).
In contrast, the Milky Way to the upper right is setting and includes Canis Major, Gemini, and Auriga. Just below this region are the constellations of Orion and Taurus.
Around the horizon is the faint greenish glow of airglow, a faint emission from Earth's atmosphere.
