Errata for "Eclipse Bulletin: Total Solar Eclipse of 2017 August 21"
(Versions 1.0a and 1.0b)

Below is a list of errata in Versions 1.0a and 1.0b (as of 2015 Jun 21). They have been corrected in Version 1.0c. Thanks to the following proofreaders who contributed to this page: Prof. J. M. Pasachoff, Ricardo Alcocer, Stephen Bedingfield, Joe Rao, and Terry Cuttle.

  • Section 1.5, Page 15, 2nd paragraph, 1st sentence,
    "The umbra finally reaches terra firma...etc...at 17:16 UT1 (09:16 PDT)" should be "17:16 UT1 (10:16 PDT)".
  • Section 1.5, Page 17, 3rd paragraph:
    "greatest eclipse - at 18:26:40 UT1 (14:26:40 CDT)" should be "greatest eclipse - at 18:25:32 UT1 (14:25:32 CDT)".
  • Section 1.5, Page 18, 1st paragraph:
    "ever since its Oregon landfall 45 minutes earlier" should be "ever since its Oregon landfall 71 minutes earlier".
  • Section 1.10, Page 38, first paragraph:
    "the prevously chapter" should be "the previous chapter".
  • Section 1.11, Page 40, 1st paragraph:
    - "...they are all negative..." should be "...they are all positive..."
    - "...a slightly shorter central total phase is predicted." should be "...a slightly longer central total phase is predicted."
    - "...due to several deep valleys along the Moon's eastern and western limbs..." should be "...due to a mountainous region in the southeast quadrant of the Moon..."

  • A new section Greatest Eclipse and Greatest Duration was added to Version 1.0b as Section 1.9. The original sections 1.9 to 1.12 were renumbered 1.10 to 1.13 to accommodate the new Section 1.9.

  • Section 2.3, Page 47, in the paragraph above equation 2-1:
    "the umbral is a relative measure" should be "the umbral depth is a relative measure"
  • A bug has been found in the software that coverts UT to local time in Tables 1 through 20. In some cases, the local times are off by 1 hour as follows.

  • Table 2-1, Page 49:
    Chandler, Arizona - subtract 1 hour from times.
    Conway, Arkansas - add 1 hour to times.
  • Table 2-4, Page 52:
    Fort Walton Beach, Florida - subtract 1 hour from times.
    Panama City, Florida - subtract 1 hour from times.
    Pensacola, Florida - subtract 1 hour from times.
  • Table 2-5, Page 53:
    Hilo, Hawaii - subtract 1 hour from times.
    Ammon, Idaho - add 1 hour to times.
  • Table 2-8, Page 56:
    - Local times for the following cities in Kentucky are correct: Covington, Lexington, Louisville
    - Subtract 1 hour from the times for all other cities in Kentucky.
  • Table 2-13, Page 61:
    The following cities in Nebraska are all in the MDT time zone (rather than CDT). Their local times must be corrected by subtracting 1 hour:
    Alliance, Bridgeport, Gering, Mitchell, and Scottsbluff
  • Table 2-17, Page 65:
    Ontario, Oregon - add 1 hour to times.
    Vale, Oregon - add 1 hour to times.
  • Table 2-18, Page 66:
    Rapid City, South Dakota - subtract 1 hour from times.
  • Table 2-20, Page 68:
    The following cities in Tennessee are all in the CDT time zone (rather than EST). Their local times must be corrected by subtracting 1 hour:
    Algood, Ashland City, Brentwood, Carthage, Clarksville, Cookeville, Crossville, Dunlap, Gallatin, Goodlettsville, Hendersonville, Jackson, La Vergne, Lafayette, Lebanon, Livingston, McMinnville, Memphis, Monterey, Mount Juliet, Murfreesboro, Nashville, Oak Hill, Portland, Smithville, Smyrna, Sparta, Springfield, and White House

  • Section 3.1, Page 79, 4th paragraph:
    "...yellow lines...at 5 minute intervals" should be "...yellow lines...at 10 minute intervals"

  • Section 4.1, Page 102, 2nd paragraph, 5th line:
    "per board" should be "perf board"
  • Section 4.4, Page 110, 3rd paragraph, 2nd line:
    "the Sun" repeated, second instance should to be deleted.
  • Section 4.4, Page 110:
    added footnote for "mv":
    "The apparent visual magnitude (mv) of a celestial body is a measure of its brightness in the visible spectrum as seen by an observer on Earth, adjusted to the value it would have in the absence of the atmosphere. The brighter the object appears, the lower the value of its apparent magnitude."

  • The following instances of "Figure 5-1" should read "Figure 5-2":
    - Section 5.4, p.118, para 2, line 5-6
    - Section 5.4, p.120, para 2, line 1
    - Section 5.5, p.122, para 2, line 1-2
    - Section 5.5, p.123, para 2, line 4
    - Section 5.6, p.124, para 1, line 2
    - Section 5.6, p.124, para 3, line 3

  • Section 6.11, Page 138:
    Footnote 2 should read: "During the 21st century, the paths of 8 total solar eclipses cross parts of the continental USA in 2017, 2024, 2044, 2045, 2052, 2078, 2079, and 2099. See Section 7–10 for more information."

  • Section 7.10, Page 144:
    - "first of 9 total solar eclipses" should be "first of 8 total solar eclipses"
    - delete "2071" from list in line 2
    - Figure 7-2 should not include eclipse of 2071 Sep 23 (it narrowly misses the USA)

Below is a list of errata in Version 1.0c (as of 2015 July 21). This list also applies to all previous versions. They have been corrected in Version 1.0d. (Note: Page numbering below is for Version 1.0c.)

  • Section 1.8, Page 32, second paragraph:
    "95%" should be "98%" and "71%" should be "87%"
  • Section 1.8, Page 33, caption to Figure 1-4:
    "67%" should be "~87%" and "80%" should be "~90%"

  • Section 5.2, Page 116, Figure 5.2:
    There is an error on these graphs - the "Columbia Plateau" arrow should read "Columbia Basin".

  • Section 5.8, Page 127:
    text to discuss hurricanes has been added

  • Section 6.2, Page 130:
    change Highway 26 to 20 (2 places, one in the middle of the page, the other near the bottom).
  • Section 6.2, Page 131: second paragraph: "but quickly grew interested with the news..." (add "with")

  • Section 6.7, Page 136:
    near the top: "little-town-America" - add a hyphen before America

  • Section 6.8, Page 137:
    add hyphen to "picture-book" near the top of the page

  • Section 6.10, Page 138:
    add a period after "old world charm" near the top of the page.
  • Section 6.10, Page 138:
    all references to "Buckhall" should be "Buck Hall."

    The following cities in Indiana are all in the EST time zone (rather than CDT). Their local times for each eclipse contact must be corrected by adding 1 hour:
